In Case You Didn't Know...

I am madly, hopelessly and irrevocably in love with my girlfriend.

Thinking on the Boondocks.

Mr. DuBois, are you fully aware of the extent to which niggas love R. Kelly?

I've given that statement a lot of thought since I saw the second episode of the Boondocks Season 1 DVD set with my brother. And the more I mulled it over in my head, the more I heard myself making a similar statement about middle class white people and the pop-culture version of Christianity.

"Are you fully aware of the extent to which Fundamentalists love Left Behind?"

Aaron McGruder is my hero for the funny, but penetratingly true statements he makes about black culture, white culture, and the society in which the two worlds collide. I myself am not black, but a lot of his critique against ignorant peoples of his race I think apply equally to ignorant people of any sort of ethnicity, creed, or nationality. I don't know if that was his intention, but it seems to me that he has accomplished just that.

So many times as I have laughed my way through his television and comic strip series I have simultaneously investigated myself and stopped to consider my place in the fight for social justice, true freedom, equality, and other sorts of civil rights.

Often times I have merely thought myself as meek and quiet, being able to do nothing more than merely stand aside and not get in the way. Being white, I don't know what exactly to do without sounding like I'm trying to be politically correct (which I find to be a rather ineffectual tool white people have developed in trying to do something about the current social configuration).

On the other hand, I feel like what Aaron McGruder does with his comic and TV show is the sort of thing I want to do in the world of Christianity. Only rather than discuss the ramifications of the "nigga moment" or demonstrate the cruelty and callousness of American business, I would instead show the foolishness of Turn-or-Burn evangelism or reveal how cold and hateful the Dispensationalist view of Revelation really is.

Perhaps some day I will.

I am the spark that makes your idea bright, the same spark that lights the dark so you can know your left from your right.

Spiritual Direction.

It's coming to that point in the RCIA classes where those of us who are seriously considering joining the Catholic Church take a more active step in that direction. I spoke to Father Adam about my decision to join the Catholic Church, and I feel pretty comfortable with it. I will also get to take a Saint's name when I join the Church. Evidently the saint I choose will be like a special spiritual partner to me. At least that's what Monsignor Cuddy says.

So now I'm not sure what to do. I've looked over a list of the saints and read up on some of the ones I'm not too familiar with. I'm not sure if this should be such a big deal for me, but it really is. So I'll be thumbing through information on various saints as I go along. Hopefully I'll have my mind made up before the Rite of Election. I think that's when I choose.

My New Year's Resolution.

I resolve to become a superhero by the end of the year.

No, srsly.

I will.

On a whim.

This afternoon, for no apparent reason, I went about the city of Peachtree City looking for empty space. Places where businesses had closed down or moved. I found two spots. Driving nearly without plan, I stumbled from one place to the next, making things work together on any number of fronts. I've got ideas for physical exercise, game time stuff, and a bit more. I'm excited. And I don't even really know what it is I'm doing.

Uncloseted Theologian.

I got to see you without your clothes on once.

I finally said out loud what I've always known, and what I'm sure my closest friends have more than likely guessed at: In theological/religious conversations, I almost never present my personal views on a given topic. I always take a stance against something if I think it's stupid, or I give a point of view to make people squirm or whatever, but I never give out MY view.

Never thought I'd see you naked.

I suppose the reasons for not presenting my views are as follows:

1) I've always been in hostile environs most of the time.

2) People that don't respond to me with hostility often don't understand how much my view means to me.

3) Sometimes I don't know what I believe.

I talk a lot about God. I know more than some about God. But I never actually say what's really close to my heart, mind, and soul.
