The young man shut his eyes and slowly began to shut the rest of himself. His ears, his nose, no sound, no smells--even his touch numbed as the night met the temperature of the ice ball in stomach. Then the darkness touched his foot and began to crawl up his leg and reached his chest. It lighted on his arms and the top of his head, spreading down into his ears, into his nose and mouth. It reached inside him and made him nothing until the night chill ran another finger down his back. He shivered again and opened his eyes. Then, turning towards the light, he regained his grip on the pan and left the cold grease on the field in the dark, and headed towards his home near the light.
